Classic Roots feel with coarse American Rasta vocals. "Scholars Word" is a cool name for a contemporary Roots band that has an old skool sound and a new skool singer. They remind me a lot of "Inca Inca", but the vocals and horns are not as good.
"How Long" Track 1 starts with some soul full dub, incorporates timely horns and deep lyrics. The Dj part comes in pretty loud and doesn't add much. The mixing isn't that clean. "Double Life" Track 2 is blessed with sweet dubbed melodica which I can never get enough of. I love the base line. This song has all kinds of subtle musical elements, but I am not impressed with the lyrics. Can't really tell what he is singing about. Track 3, "I Know" is my favorite. I am so into the organ sound in Reggae and I like this trak a lot. It is very positive and up lifting. The guitar riff is well placed too.
"Runnin" Track 4 is one of my favorite songs and Track 7 "Feelin it" is the highlight of the album."Part of Me" doesn't do much for me. But hey, it is a sold track for the CD. I don't like when they step it up into the dancehall sound.
Track 6 "Actions" is nice nice. The vocals are very thought out and the tone is on. Actions do speak louder than words. This is a life principle that guides me and makes for a kind chorus. I am not really feeling the track "Feeling It." I think it is the vocals. The track is not bad. I like the horns for sure and the Dj part saves the song.
"We Built It" has a rock fusion sound. It is a decent track and the guitar solo and riffs real take the spotlight in this song. "H.I.M. God" is an upbeat rack. I like it and I think is a direction I think the band should go in the future. I know I sound more like a producer than a cridict, but I can't change who I am.
Ah yes. We come to the final track "Proton Dub". I am keen on dub and this track does not disappoint. It contains all the elements I like about this band.
The dubbed out parts (not the dub track) are kinda week. I am not really feeing the singer's voice, but I love the spirit and message. It sounds like they were trying really hard to make the music sound perfect and I think it lost a little because of this. I think a little imperfection is not a bad thing when it comes to music. The CD sounds a little robotics musically but it does grows on you and the title track is very catchy. I bet these guys are great live!
